AIMS & OBJECTIVES

The Cheese and Grain project was conceived as a flagship development to assist in the regeneration of Frome, to raise the profile of the town centre, to encourage tourism and to assist in putting Frome on the map. Once established, the management of the building was transferred to an independent charity.

 

Frome Cheese & Grain Ltd's key strategic objects are:

 

1.   To provide a community hall for the inhabitants of Frome and the surrounding parishes including use of the property for meetings lectures and classes or other forms of recreation and leisure time occupation in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants of Frome and surrounding parishes.

 

This includes

  • enabling local residents to be informed, educated and consulted about local services and policies by local charitable and statutory agencies

  • enabling residents to come together to celebrate significant events

  • a wide range of planned activities to increase use of the hall by charities. clubs and individuals

2.  To promote the urban and rural regeneration of Frome and the surrounding area.

 

The Cheese and Grain has for a decade formed a key feature of plans to regenerate Frome. In its role as a community hall it is a means of drawing people into the town, helping to revitalise the economy.

 

The Trust aims to continue, and to develop further, activities that meet one or more of the following specific regeneration objectives:

  • providing a community hall as an integral part of addressing urban and rural regeneration. To provide recreational facilities for the public at large or those who by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, poverty or social and economic circumstances, have need of such facilities; and to organise or work in partnership with others to organise activities that encourage use of the building for this purpose.

  • maintaining and improving the building as a public amenity, a large, flat-floor venue in the centre of town ideally suited to markets, music events and a range of other activities

  • conserving and enhancing the Cheese and Grain building as an historic feature of the urban landscape of Frome, enhancing the appearance of the town centre and linking the modern development of Frome to its history as a market town

  • providing space and facilities that will create education, training and employment opportunities for local people.

  • promoting public safety and the prevention of crime

  • working with outside agencies on the co-ordination and management   of charitable activities whether within the building or elsewhere (for example, educational courses)

3.    Commercial Activity

 

Some events do not fall within the charitable objects. Such activities will be operated through the charity's subsidiary trading company, Frome Cheese & Grain Trading Company Ltd. This has the primary aim of raising funds for the  charitable objects and to ensure the viability of the building for the future. The intention is that such commercial activities will be scheduled at times when the building is not being used for charitable purposes.

 

Commercial events include evening music events and some other activities.
