FROME TOWN

Frome is the largest and most easterly town in the Mendip District, with a population of over 25,000, increased to well over 30,000 by the large number of surrounding villages.

Frome recently received the accolade of being voted number three in the top ten best market towns in England in a CPRE survey. It does not take visitors long to appreciate why. Frome is a desirable area for lifestyle, culture and leisure and for all things that lead to an excellent quality of life and enrichment of the individual and community.

Frome is a true market town. There are colourful outdoor Charter markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a monthly farmers market and regular indoor markets at the Cheese & Grain. There is even a weekly cattle market at Standerwick, just 4 miles from Frome.

Steeped in history, its character having evolved over hundreds of years, the town certainly has not lost its character under the pressure of modern living. Frome boasts more listed buildings than any other town in Somerset.

However, Frome is not just a historical showpiece, but is constantly looking to the future. The creative , musical, literary and artistic skills within the community are second to none. The growth of the annual Frome Festival focuses and celebrates strands of life that flavour Frome in its daily life. In addition to the Cheese & Grain the town has two theatres, a cinema, a leisure centre, art galleries and numerous craft shops.

The range of clubs, organisations and hobby groups shows that Frome is a town that has something for everyone. Sports provision is excellent and youth groups are flourishing.

Frome has over 200 thriving retail outlets. Many highly individual, specialist shops are centred around medieval Cheap Street featuring an open leat running down its centre and the cobbled 17th century Catherine Hill. Frome is also rightly proud of its industry and commerce. Several of the towns major employers have worldwide reputations for excellence.

Frome is surrounded by glorious countryside and a wealth of historic and picturesque villages. It is an ideal centre for tourism with world renowned visitor attractions including Longleat House and Safari park right on our doorstep and the cities of Bath and Wells only 30 minutes away.
