ACOUSTIC PLUS FESTIVAL SPECIAL

This Acoustic Plus special is a landmark occasion – the 50th Acoustic Plus!

Since September 2002 the A+ team have been bringing you the best and most varied live music in town, a total of over 150 different acts, and to celebrate they are giving away a free CD to each of the first 50 people through the door. There will be a selection of fabulous Acoustic Plus acts to choose from - first-come, first-served!

With the World Food Feast going on from 5:30 to 9:00 in the centre of town, the doors will open slightly later than usual at 8:30, and start the live music around 9:00. And what is this live music?

New sounds from diverse individuals James Campbell and John Ruddock, one fascinated with and immersed in the intrinsic techniques and distinctive rhythm patterns of Latin guitar, the other a classical and electric guitarist, cellist and African drummer, they now share the stage as Campbell-Ruddock. Playing their own guitar-fuelled songs - soothing, moving, with dynamic harmonies - their distinct style seems capable of making anything possible.

With the emphasis on melodic and soulful music that is reminiscent of Harvest-era Neil Young, Christian Pattemore has a different take on a West Coast sound, perhaps because he hails from the West Country. With fantastic percussion and wonderful keyboards (among other things), Layback Ruby make a return visit to play new tunes from their “nearly ready” new album.

Frome’s own young singer-songwriter Nancy Black has been making lots of friends – 26,261 last time we looked on MySpace. Not surprising with her amazing songs. We’ve put her together with brilliant guitar player Woodsy from Somerset Battle-of-the-Bands finalists Jakarta to bring you an acoustic duo that will highlight her distinctive voice. Something special.

Formerly known as Little Gaia, “soundtrack to the summer” Rainy and the Dust deliver upbeat lyrics and feel-good funk, rock, Latin, afro and reggae influenced grooves. Body-boppingly brilliant, these west Wales boys quickly gained a large following amongst the local surfing community. “Like Bill Withers on a surfboard or a slacker generation Paul Simon, Rainy's laid back grooves get under your skin", testifies Justin Adams (BBC World Music Award winner, Robert Plant’s guitarist of choice and Acoustic Plus performer in 2003).

You can hear songs/tunes from all the performers at http://www.myspace.com/acousticplus. You’ll also find links to lots of previous and some forthcoming acts.

SUN 6 JULY

ANDY FAIRWEATHER LOW & The Low Riders

Andy Fairweather Low’s pedigree is the stuff rock dreams are made of. He first came to prominence as the lead singer in Amen Corner. The 60s saw them clock up hit after pop hit. Songs such as 'Bend Me Shape Me', 'Hello Suzy', '( If Paradise is ) Half As Nice' are internationally remembered to this day.

Since that time Andy has gone on to work with Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Roger Waters, Dave Gilmour, The Who, BB King, Joe Cocker, Steve Winwood, Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn, Jimmy Page, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, The Bee Gees, Jeff Beck, Lonnie Donegan, Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts, Mary J. Blige, Dave Edmunds, Georgie Fame, Phil Collins, Van Morrison, Gerry Rafferty, Chris Rea, Chris Barber, Jackson Browne, Bill Wyman, Sheryl Crow, Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, Pete Townshend... and hundreds more.

A world tour as musical director with Roger Waters' band then a European tour with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings might be difficult to top for most people - but not for Andy Fairweather Low. He just segues smoothly to a solo tour with some of the world’s finest musicians in his band.

If you just remember Andy's early work and major solo hits such as 'Wide Eyed And Legless', you're in for a treat - there's so much more. His new show includes songs from his whole career as well as the new ‘Sweet Soulful Music’ CD. A unique and superlative musical evening.

YolanDa Brown

COURTNEY PINE BAND

It's almost two decades since Courtney Pine journeyed to the urge within and released a shock-and-awe debut album that put contemporary jazz in the British Top 40 album charts for the first time. Pine's debut was a feverish statement of intent, and to anyone around at the time it's still profoundly redolent of the excitement surrounding British jazz's revitalisation.
Nothing, since, has distracted Courtney from a very personal journey that has provided the soundscape to a tour of his influences and life experiences. He is a multi-award winning artist and now broadcaster with a live touring history that has brought his sound to audiences across the World and across genres.
It's a combination that's come to characterise the Courtney sound - an inclusive vision of a living and breathing contemporary UK jazz, bringing together jazz, reggae, hip hop and drum and bass influences in a totally inclusive way.

Expect to hear first airings of new album material and gems from his current 'Resistance'
set.

2008 LINE-UP: COURTNEY PINE - SAXOPHONES; CAMERON PIERRE - GUITAR; ROBERT FORDJOUR - DRUMS
CHRIS JEROME - PIANO/KEYBOARDS;DARREN TAYLOR - BASS; OMAR PUENTE - ELECTRIC VIOLIN

Saxophonist YolanDa Brown, considered by many to be one of a kind is supporting Courtney Pine.

YolanDa is as comfortable re-interpreting a current chart-topper, as she is reprising a Jazz standard or launching into an original composition, making the Tenor and Soprano Saxophones her very own. Always in evidence is her raw emotion which has become synonymous with the YolanDa Brown sound.

She references Jazz, Afro-Jazz, Gospel, Reggae, Salsa, Hip-hop, R&B, with consummate ease, even going back to Mento throughout her performances, but her style and phrasing always remains her own.

SETH LAKEMAN

This West Country born singer/songwriter brings his acclaimed live show to Frome Festival

The dynamic Seth Lakeman, armed with raging fiddle, rampant imagination and energetic voice, has given fiery new life and contemporary relevance to the rich heritage of legends that lurk in the shadows of the English west country. Born and bred in the desolate beauty of Dartmoor, Lakeman was raised on ghostly tales and, in a sensational rise since his shock Mercury Music Award nomination in 2005, has created a unique, highly original niche both as a dramatic storyteller and a thrilling live performer.

Seth’s feet have scarcely touched the ground since. The Mercury nomination, hit singles with White Hare and Lady of the Sea, major festival appearances, tours all over the world, appearances on every TV show in the western world, the admiration of celebrity fans like Ricky Gervais, and a strange encounter with Sharon Osbourne, who - for reasons best known to herself – licked his face on live television. Such is life in the weird, unpredictable, enthralling world of Seth Lakeman…

‘Poor Man's Heaven’ is released on Relentless on June 30th

TINARIWEN -
Championed by the likes of Robert Plant, Thom Yorke, Bono, Carlos Santana & Rolling Stones, this incredible band of rock'n'roll troubadours from the Southern Sahara have become one of the most acclaimed and revered groups on the planet!
Influenced by such luminaries as Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, Dire Straits, Bad Company, Santana & Bob Dylan, their totally unique blend of roots, rock and blues has given rise to such appraisal as "It's as if Keith Richard, Santana, John Lee Hooker, various members of Primal Scream and the Grateful Dead got lost in Sahara for a decade and then returned as a fully-fledged desert band!"
Lured into Libyan training camps in the 80's, they emerged at the end of the rebellion and acquired legendary status, organising the first Festival In The Desert in 2001.
Being nomadic tribesmen, they had no problems with touring and quickly became feted in Europe, graduating to prestigious festivals and selling out venues all over the world.
Their latest album "Aman Iman: Water Of Life" has won unprecedented acclaim, heralded by Q, Mojo, Observer, Daily Telegraph, Uncut, The Times,fRoots, Guardian, Time Out, Andy Kershaw, Charlie Gillett and countless others.
